The Guest House

Vance's Country Guest House

Enjoy the charm of a country farmhouse in the beautiful Bullpasture valley. Built in 1885, the house sheltered an old Highland county family and raised eight children during the Depression. Now in the process of coming back to life after several years of loneliness, it will be a delightful place for you and yours to rest and relax.

Situated on 150 acres, the house oversees a flock of chickens and several horses on a daily basis. Bullpasture River flows through the property, offering wading, swimming, fishing, and general outdoor fun. Depending on the season, you can experience making hay, pressing apple cider, harvesting vegetables, gathering eggs, or making maple syrup. Your hosts, Nancy & Robin Vance, will make you feel right at home.

  1. We (husband, 5 year old son, and I) just returned from our first Maple Festival and stay at the Vances' guest house. The guest house is a lovingly restored home, not a "rental". We've never stayed anywhere so beautifully prepared, with such attention to detail. This is especially true in the kitchen which has everything you might need.

The farm is the perfect confluence of mountains, river, and pasture; wonderful for walking and exploring, enjoying the company of chickens and horses along the way. And if you love the night sky, this is about as dark and star-filled as it gets in Virginia.

Robin and Nancy indeed will make you feel right at home. You will get to know Highland County in a way you can't from guidebooks or a museum.

The only drawback of the trip? Having to leave!
