Photo Challenge: Windows and Doors

Windows and doors...hmmm. Doesn't sound too hard, does it? I didn't think so until I tried! I found this challenge to be challenging! Lighting was tricky, what with porches and reflections to deal with. I also had trouble getting a "straight on" shot, where the edges of the doors or windows were parallel to the edges of the photo. And I realized that, even though a particular door meant something to me, which maybe made up for a less-than-great photograph, it would mean nothing to a stranger, which would only accentuate the photo's flaws. In the end, here are the best of what I shot for this challenge.

The first two are of windows in an old "colored" church, as we always called it, just down the street from the house where I grew up. The windows are huge and I couldn't get a good shot of an entire window that seemed in proper proportion. So, I settled for only part of the window, either with leaves or without.

This door is one that I had trouble getting straight. Maybe I need a different lens?

This window shot really threw me for a loop! The small window  in the middle, with the curtain, is actually on the opposite side of the house from where I was standing! All that stuff around it is the street behind me, reflected in the glass of the window I was shooting through. Confusing, huh?

This month has gotten a little crazy, making photo excursions few and far between. I dug around in my archives and found a few more shots that fit in the category of windows and doors. This first one was taken in Jamestown Settlement in 2012. I accompanied a class of fourth graders on an overnight field trip to Virginia's Historic Triangle of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg.

The next two were taken in Colonial Williamsburg on that same field trip.

I like wondering what's behind interesting doors, and this one is no exception.

If this old window could talk, what stories would it tell?

And finally, here are some windows from my house.

Thanks to Donna at A Personal Photo Challenge for giving me such a tough assignment. And Merry Christmas in September to you!

  1. I think your photos of the church windows are quite nice. I especially like the one with the leafy branches in the foreground.

And I love the door and window of Colonial Williamsburg! They are great shots...and in one of my favorite places!

  3. Firstly, great to meet you through the PPC, I'm loving, the challenge itself and meeting new bloggers is the icing on the cake. You say you had difficulty with this challenge, it doesn't look like. Your photos are amazing. My particular favourite, the one with the curtained window on the other side of the room with the reflections of the busy street in the background. It's a story in itself.
    Great job!
    See you soon.

  4. I'm still staring at the window with the curtain pulled back and the reflection of the street. That is such an interesting photo....it's the MOST interesting one in the challenge! Thanks for sharing!

  5. As one who is in love with her own kitchen window, I have really enjoyed seeing yours in winter at Christmastime...so charming!

The one with the reflections is fascinating. I read what you had to say about it three times and just decided it'll remain a mystery.

I like windows that give the viewer a peek in, through the room, and right out another window to the world beyond. That's how it is at Leslie Land's blog.

Thanks for participating so we could see all these neat photos!

  6. Wonderful photos, especially those of home! I have similar lacey curtains at some of my windows, As far as the reflection one, I always find them interesting. Sometimes when you take the photo you don't realize how much you will see in it!

  7. So many terrific examples, including Christmas, LOL! I think you covered all the bases!

I particularly love the ones from your home. So cozy! And the closeup of the door hardware was perfect. Love that texture of the layers of paint. And I remember the circular windows so well at Williamsburg in the Capitol Building. Give yourself a hand of this challenge!

P.S. You don't need to buy a different lens for the straightening a door (such as in your third photo). The image was taken with a wide angle lens setting, so it is slightly distorted. An editing program, such as Photoshop, can be used to straighten out the lines. It is a post-processing correction.

  9. That last window looking out at the snow kind of shocked me and gave me a warm fuzzy. Oh my. Christmas is coming in just over 3 months! :) I like your selection of doors and windows. The red door is gorgeous and the window in the reflection is very interesting. The round window is beautiful. Wonderful photos! Pamela

  10. Beautiful shots. The weathered wood and window in the gable of the building at Williamsburg has so much texture. And you're right - that window reflection IS confusing. Great job.
